Spanish unions propose a 7% rise in the minimum wage

Spain’s UGT and CCOO unions have proposed a 7% rise in the legal minimum wage for next year.

If approved, it would bring the minimum to €1,307 gross a month in 14 payments, an increase of €85.50 per month.

The unions say rising prices have eroded the latest wage increase, which was 3.1% in February.

They also want wage agreements to protect pay from inflation and a rule preventing minimum-wage rises from reducing some workers’ extra pay.

The unions say they will press the government to approve tougher working-time checks and the pay rule before elections.

They presented these demands alongside plans for a general housing strike on November 11, which they say will target employers and public authorities.
