Cádiz PP calls for Algeciras mayor to resign after two sexual assault complaints

Cádiz’s Popular Party has called for Algeciras mayor José Ignacio Landaluce to resign after learning of two complaints alleging sexual assault.

The complaints were made by two women who are party members, and the allegations have not been established in court.

One complaint was brought to the party directly by the woman who filed it; the other had previously been reported to the Supreme Court.

Twelve of the 15 PP councillors in the city signed a request for Landaluce to leave office.

The party says it has lost confidence in him, though it says it respects the presumption of innocence; Landaluce is no longer a party member.

If he refuses to resign, the councillors have been told to withdraw their support and government roles, and the party says it will pursue steps to regain control of the city.

The allegations and the party’s demand have created a political crisis in Algeciras, where Landaluce has been mayor since 2011.
