Fire salamanders found to glow cyan-green under ultraviolet light
Under ultraviolet light, fire salamanders’ skin and defensive secretions glow cyan-green.
The effect is strongest on their yellow underside and sides, and secretions may keep glowing for more than a day after they are released.
Scientists do not yet know what the glow is for.
It might help salamanders recognize one another or add to the warning that they are toxic, but those ideas have not been proven.
