Hunan launches AI platform for hybrid rice breeding

Hunan has launched an artificial intelligence platform for hybrid rice breeding at Yuelu Mountain Laboratory in Changsha.

The platform was developed by a rice-breeding team at the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Institute of Automation.

It is named in memory of rice scientist Yuan Longping and is intended to carry forward his scientific work.

The platform brings together a question-and-answer tool, a breeding resource database, a knowledge map and a collection of research papers.

It is being tested in third-generation hybrid rice breeding, and experts say it is still an early version that will need further development.

The aim is to help breeders use data to choose parent plants and breeding combinations, rather than relying mainly on experience.

Experts say this could speed up the development of improved rice varieties and reduce breeding costs and risks, supporting food security.

They have called for the platform to improve, connect research and industry, and eventually serve users beyond Hunan.
