Germany needs €6 trillion in climate investment by 2045, study says

Germany aims to be climate-neutral by 2045, meaning it should not release more greenhouse gases than can be stored.

A study by the Prognos research institute, commissioned by state development bank KfW, estimates that reaching this goal will require €6 trillion in investment between 2025 and 2045.

The estimate covers spending by households, businesses and the state, with the state responsible for 12 percent.

Much of the investment would be needed even if Germany continued using coal, oil and gas, so the study estimates that about half is additional spending linked to the climate transition.

That additional amount is around €145 billion a year.

The largest investment needs are in transport, especially switching to electric cars, and in adapting the electricity grid for wind and solar power.

The climate-neutrality goal is set in law, but the study does not say what specific measures will follow.
