Wuhan develops hollow-core fiber for faster optical communications

Engineers at a special-fiber laboratory in Wuhan are working on hollow-core optical fiber, a technology designed to carry light through an empty central channel.

Tiny glass structures built into the fiber help guide the light, much like a track, rather than letting it travel through solid glass.

The technology is expected to make data transmission much faster.

The work is one part of Wuhan’s effort to develop five connected industrial clusters focused on optics, vehicles, space, digital networks and medicine.

The city says these clusters can support each other, for example by combining optical technology, computing and vehicle systems.

This matters because Wuhan aims to strengthen its role in advanced industries and contribute to China’s technology development.

The city has set 2026 targets for the size of each cluster, but the account does not say when the hollow-core fiber will be used commercially.
