Ethiopian forces enter Tigray town after TPLF fighters leave

Ethiopian federal forces and an allied militia entered Adwa, a town in the northern Tigray region near the Eritrean border, on Sunday.

Residents said Tigray People's Liberation Front (TPLF) forces had left the day before.

One resident said government forces had not yet reached the town centre.

Shops were closed, and residents reported that government buildings, including a hospital, had been looted.

Fighting between federal forces and the TPLF began in late September, and government forces have pushed the rebels back towards Eritrea.

Ethiopia accuses Eritrea of supporting the TPLF, raising fears of renewed conflict between the two countries.

Flights to Tigray's regional capital, Mekelle, and telecommunications services have resumed, but the sources do not say what will happen next in Adwa.
