Ethiopian forces enter Adwa after TPLF fighters withdraw

Ethiopian government forces and an allied militia entered Adwa, a town in the northern Tigray region, after Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) fighters withdrew.

Residents said the entry happened without a fight, though one resident said government forces had not yet reached the town centre.

The advance came days after federal forces captured nearby Adigrat and Mekelle, Tigray’s regional capital.

Fighting between Ethiopian forces and an alliance of armed groups that includes the TPLF began on September 23, and the alliance captured Mekelle’s airport.

Ethiopian Airlines resumed flights between Addis Ababa and Mekelle on Sunday, for the first time since September 23.

Adwa residents said shops were closed and government institutions, including the hospital, had been looted, while people feared theft.

The TPLF’s regional administration had moved temporarily from Mekelle, but the sources do not say what will happen next in Adwa.

What people are saying

All the shops in the town are closed. Last night, many government institutions, including Adwa Hospital, were looted.
