Swiss government race could pit Geneva against St. Gallen
Switzerland is preparing to choose a successor to government minister Guy Parmelin.
Two possible candidates are Esther Friedli, a senator from St. Gallen in eastern Switzerland, and Céline Amaudruz, a lawmaker from Geneva in the French-speaking west.
Neither has confirmed that she will run, and St. Gallen’s SVP party plans to nominate a candidate on October 21.
If Friedli were elected, St. Gallen would have two ministers because Karin Keller-Sutter is also from the canton.
The French-speaking region could then lose one of its two seats, which it has held since 1970.
Political scientist Adrian Vatter says language-region balance matters more than representation for a particular canton.
Some parliament members expect the French-speaking region could regain a seat if another minister, Ignazio Cassis, leaves office after his 2027 presidential year, but that is not confirmed.
A possible Swiss cabinet race between Geneva’s Céline Amaudruz and St. Gallen’s Esther Friedli could affect regional representation in the seven-member government.
Friedli has not said whether she will run, while St. Gallen’s Swiss People’s Party plans to nominate a candidate on October 21.
If elected, Friedli would join fellow St. Galler Karin Keller-Sutter in the cabinet, giving the canton two seats.
Her election could leave French-speaking Switzerland with one cabinet seat, despite its representation by two members since 1970.
Political scientist Adrian Vatter said language representation matters more than representation by canton.

Political scientist Adrian Vatter says the language question is more important than canton membership.
Today I will not comment on this question.
Esther Friedli is in discussions with me and the cantonal party.
French-speaking Switzerland represents 25 percent of Switzerland and two Federal Council seats are also 25 percent.
The language question is more important than belonging to a canton.
