Indonesia’s QRIS payment system grows to 67 million users

Indonesia’s QRIS payment system grows to 67 million users

Indonesia’s central bank introduced QRIS in 2019 as a common QR code payment standard.

Some banks initially resisted because they already had their own QR payment systems.

Bank Indonesia kept promoting the shared standard, which it said could make payments more integrated and accessible.

The system now has 67 million users and 46.7 million merchants, 96% of them small and medium-sized businesses.

QRIS is also being used in traditional markets, where shoppers and vendors have adopted it as a convenient way to pay.

For cross-border payments, it is connected with China, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Japan and Timor-Leste.

Bank Indonesia says it is exploring partnerships with more central banks to extend this service for Indonesian and foreign visitors.
