Spain’s early election puts property, construction and banks in focus

Spain has called an early general election for Nov.

29, putting investors on alert about possible changes in government policy.

Analysts say the PSOE may lose, and a government led by the centre-right PP with support from Vox is one possible outcome.

They expect a more business-friendly government could benefit property companies, builders, banks and some electricity companies.

The PP is expected to support building more homes, which could help address Spain’s housing shortage and support construction and lending.

Merlin Properties and Colonial could also gain if uncertainty over the tax rules for property investment companies eases, though interest rates, financing and rents would still matter.

Analysts say a governing majority able to pass budgets and provide stable rules would be positive for markets, while prolonged negotiations or another parliamentary stalemate could weigh on them.

Investors will watch the election result and whether the next government can form a stable majority.
