Gemini adds a map tool for location-based searches
Google’s Gemini app has a Map tool that lets people choose an area on a map and ask questions about places there.
The tool began appearing for users around October 2 and is available in the Android and iPhone apps, but not on the web or desktop apps.
Users can move and zoom the map, then tap “Explore this area” to add the selected area to their prompt.
In tests in Park Slope, Brooklyn, Gemini suggested cafés within the marked area and gave details such as ratings, price ranges, opening hours and walking times.
The walking distances were measured from the center of the selected area.
Gemini mostly stayed within the marked area, but when options were limited, it suggested a nearby café outside it.
The feature may help people find places without needing to remember or type an exact street name.
