Romanian court orders Calin Georgescu moved to house arrest for 30 days
A Romanian court ordered former presidential candidate Calin Georgescu moved to house arrest for 30 days, replacing police custody while an investigation continues.
Prosecutors say Georgescu and two other suspects persuaded a businessman to give them €1.1 million through a promise of help securing a credit line; Georgescu denies wrongdoing.
The investigation is separate from the 2024 presidential election, which Romania cancelled over suspected Russian interference in Georgescu’s favour.
Russia denied interfering, and the election was rerun in May 2025, when pro-European centrist Nicusor Dan won.
Georgescu is also on trial in two other cases, involving alleged attempts to disrupt national security and the promotion of Romania’s 1930s fascist leaders; he denies wrongdoing in those cases too.
The house-arrest ruling can be appealed, and the fraud investigation is still under way.
A Romanian court ruled on Tuesday that Calin Georgescu should be moved from police custody to house arrest for 30 days.
The decision is pending a criminal probe into suspected fraud and can be appealed.
