US-backed investors and tech firms own major data centers in Italy

Data centers are facilities that store and process digital information and support online services.

In Italy, the sector includes local operators such as Telecom, Aruba, Retelit and Engineering, as well as US-backed companies.

Digital Realty Trust, whose major shareholders include large US investment funds, is building a six-building campus near Rome.

Amazon, Google and Microsoft also have data centers in Italy, though they often rent space from other operators.

A study by Milan Polytechnic counted 262 data centers nationwide, with about 100 in Milan and Lombardy and dozens in Rome.

Italian companies Core Stack and Green Arrow Capital have formed a joint venture to build 13 medium-sized centers.

Their plan comes as foreign investment and ownership raise questions about control of digital infrastructure in Italy.
