Councils to choose acting mayors in two Istanbul districts
Council members in the Istanbul districts of Ataşehir and Eyüpsultan are due to choose acting mayors on October 10.
The votes follow the arrests and suspensions of the officials who had held those roles.
Ataşehir acting mayor Murat Güneş was arrested on allegations including membership in a criminal organization and taking bribes.
Eyüpsultan Mayor Mithat Bülent Özmen was arrested on allegations including bribery and interfering with public tenders.
In Ataşehir, six council members who left the CHP joined the AK Party, leaving the Cumhur Alliance with 18 members and the CHP with 17; three former CHP members are independents.
Their votes are expected to be important in Ataşehir, while Eyüpsultan’s council has 23 CHP, 11 AK Party and three MHP members.
The council votes will determine who serves as acting mayor in each district.
