Paul Bettany says Marvel changed his career and personal life
British actor Paul Bettany says his work with Marvel changed his career and personal life.
He first voiced the artificial intelligence assistant J.A.R.V.I.S. and later played the android Vision on screen.
Bettany says the role was offered just after a producer told him his career was over following two box-office disappointments.
The call came from director Joss Whedon, who asked him to play Vision.
Bettany says Marvel work has given him more time with his family and helped him direct, write and get films funded.
His latest series, “VisionQuest,” follows Vision as he seeks a new purpose while on the run with a mysterious boy who may be his son.
The series completes a trilogy that began with “WandaVision” and continued with “Agatha All Along,” and its creators say it explores concerns about artificial intelligence and what it means to be human.
Paul Bettany said Marvel changed his career and personal life after he was offered the role of Vision at a low point in his career.
He said joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe gave him opportunities to spend time with his family, direct and write a movie, and secure funding for films.
Bettany first joined Marvel as the voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. before appearing as Vision in 2015's Avengers: Age of Ultron.
He recalled that Joss Whedon offered him the role moments after a producer told him his career was over.
Bettany spoke at the London premiere of the Disney miniseries VisionQuest, which completes a trilogy with WandaVision and Agatha All Along.

What people are saying
It means I have been able to not take jobs and spend time with my family.
Then my phone rang, I answered it and it was Joss Whedon who said, 'Would you like to play the Vision?' And that is a true story.
We have this house that's supposed to be in the mind of an AI and it gets things slightly off in the way that AI does when it's taking an amalgamation of many things and turning it into one.
