Wangchuk will miss Delhi protest to prepare Ladakh for winter
Sonam Wangchuk, a climate activist based in Ladakh, says he will not attend the Cockroach Janta Party’s protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi on October 10.
The protest is calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision of voter lists.
Wangchuk said he and his team are preparing for winter by testing ways to create artificial glaciers and protect communities from glacial lake floods.
He said many glacial lakes in the high Himalayas pose a risk and that his team is working to reduce the danger before disasters happen.
Wangchuk took part in a CJP protest in July, when the movement called for the then education minister to resign over examination irregularities.
He supports the current protest but urged its organisers and participants to stay united and peaceful.
The CJP protest is scheduled for October 10 in Delhi.
Sonam Wangchuk said on Friday that he would not attend the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) planned October 10 protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi.
He said he was in Ladakh preparing for winter through experiments on artificial glaciers and measures to reduce risks from glacial lake outburst floods.
Wangchuk said natural disasters also posed serious threats and described nearly 200 glacial lakes in the region as potential hazards.
He expressed support for the protesters and urged them to remain united and peaceful.
The CJP protest was planned as part of a campaign calling for Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar to resign; Hindustan Times linked the demand to alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision.
