Five landmines found and defused along the LoC in Poonch

The Army found and destroyed five landmines in the Basoni top area of Poonch district, Jammu and Kashmir.

The area is near the Line of Control, the de facto border between India and Pakistan.

Two mines were found by an Army patrol on Saturday morning, and three had been found there the day before.

The Army’s Bomb Disposal Squad destroyed all five in controlled explosions.

Officials said there was no damage.

Landmines are placed in forward areas along the Line of Control as part of a system intended to prevent infiltration.

Heavy rain can wash mines away and bring them to the surface, where they may pose a risk.
