Police shootout in Rio leaves one officer dead and three injured

Four military police officers were shot during a clash between police teams on Sunday in the Gardênia Azul community in southwest Rio de Janeiro.

Sub-lieutenant Gláucio Marcelo, a member of BOPE, the police special operations unit, died.

Two other BOPE officers and one officer from the 18th Battalion in Jacarepaguá were injured and taken to hospital.

Initial information indicated that both teams may have mistaken the other for criminals.

The local battalion reportedly did not know BOPE was in the area, where its officers were using an unmarked vehicle.

The clash is being recorded at the 41st Police District and will be transferred to the Capital Homicide Division.

The available information does not give details about the injured officers’ condition.
