Trento allocates €2.5 million for planned migrant detention centre

The Trentino provincial government has allocated €2.5 million to build a migrant repatriation centre in Trento, northern Italy.

The centre is planned for the Maso Visintainer area, on land already acquired by the province.

It is expected to have 25 places, with two-thirds reserved for irregular migrants found in the Trentino area.

The funding was approved on October 9 as part of the province’s public works programme.

Provincial president Maurizio Fugatti said the centre is intended to improve local security and address illegal immigration.

The project design phase is due to begin soon, based on a proposal agreed with the national Interior Ministry and the government commissioner.

The same funding decision also includes money for a juvenile court building and accommodation at a police school in Moena.
