Ferrari’s electric Luce reaches its sales target despite criticism
Ferrari’s Luce is a fully electric luxury car that was presented in May.
Its design, created by former Apple designer Jony Ive, drew criticism, including from former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo.
But by July, Ferrari had reached its internal annual sales target of nearly 500 cars, and one California dealer said its allocation was sold out.
The car starts at 550,000 euros and is aimed at younger, wealthy buyers, including customers in China and Silicon Valley.
Ferrari chief executive Benedetto Vigna said the company was pleased with the launch.
Other luxury carmakers are also moving into electric vehicles, but they face costly decisions about how quickly to shift away from combustion engines.
Bentley has launched its first fully electric model, Porsche is developing an electric 718 sports car, and Jaguar is due to launch a model next week.
Ferrari’s fully electric Luce reached its internal annual sales target of nearly 500 units by July.
The target was reached despite criticism of the car’s design and questions about whether it deserved the Ferrari emblem.
The Luce has a base price of 550,000 euros.
Ferrari says the model is part of a strategy to attract younger, wealthy customers, including from China and technology hubs such as Silicon Valley.
