Italian workers’ group says 701 people have died at work this year
ANMIL, an Italian association representing workers injured or disabled on the job, says 701 workers died at work from January through August 2026.
It cited official figures showing 404,809 claims for workplace injuries in the first eight months of the year, up 5.4% from the same period a year earlier.
Claims for fatal injuries rose 2.9%, while claims for occupational diseases increased 16.3% to 74,542.
ANMIL is urging Italy to create a separate crime of workplace homicide.
It also wants a national labour prosecutor’s office to coordinate investigations, which it says are now fragmented across local areas.
A bill proposing the change was presented to the Chamber of Deputies on March 19, 2026, and is being examined by its Justice Commission.
