Brazil’s attorney general backs police chief after campaign complaint

Brazil’s attorney general, Jorge Messias, expressed support for Federal Police chief Andrei Rodrigues.

The campaign of presidential candidate Flávio Bolsonaro asked the Federal Electoral Court in the Federal District to investigate Rodrigues.

It questioned the police’s decision to open a preliminary inquiry into possible foreign interference in Brazil’s elections.

That inquiry was closed on October 7.

Messias said Rodrigues had acted within the law and that the police should be free to decide independently whether to investigate possible wrongdoing.

He also said possible foreign election interference is a legitimate subject for public debate.

The court’s response to the campaign’s request is not stated.
