ICANN receives 1,615 applications for new website endings

A web address ending such as .com is called a top-level domain.

ICANN has received 1,615 applications for new endings, including ones linked to companies, communities and unusual words.

The applicants would have to pay at least $227,000 to apply, and the proposals still need approval.

New endings could give organizations different ways to identify their websites, and winners could earn money by selling addresses that use them.
