Savitribai Shankarrao Dipke, the 85-year-old grandmother of Cockroach Janta Party founder Abhijeet Dipke, died on Saturday.

She had been ill for about a month and died at her family home in Santuk Pimpri village in Maharashtra’s Hingoli district.

Dipke was detained by Delhi Police after arriving in the capital for a protest at Jantar Mantar against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

Police informed him of his grandmother’s death while he was in detention.

He must decide whether to continue the protest or go home for her last rites, scheduled for Sunday morning.

His parents were travelling to the village, while relatives said Dipke had last seen his grandmother on August 15.

The family has not said whether he will be able to attend the rites.
