Brad Bird’s Ray Gunn is a lively sci-fi detective film, but lacks emotional depth

Ray Gunn is a new animated science-fiction detective film directed by Brad Bird.

It is set in Metropia, a city that combines film-noir style with futuristic technology.

Sam Rockwell voices Ray Gunn, a former police officer who now works as a private detective with Eye-Ra, an alien voiced by Tom Waits.

Their investigation begins after pop star Venus Nova, voiced by Scarlett Johansson, is blackmailed and her husband is found dead.

The film follows the case through twists, action scenes and a growing personal connection between Ray and Venus.

It premiered at the BFI London Film Festival, and is scheduled to open in select theaters on December 4 before debuting on Netflix on December 18.

The film is described as entertaining and visually appealing, though its characters may not feel as emotionally affecting as those in Bird’s earlier films.
