Eight-metre sinkhole closes road in Malaysia’s Kelantan state

An eight-metre-deep sinkhole has led authorities to close part of Federal Route FT08 in Gua Musang, in Malaysia’s Kelantan state.

The affected section is on the road between Gua Musang and Kota Bharu, near Kesedar Ethnobotanical Park.

The closure began on Oct 10 and applies to all vehicles.

The Public Works Department plans to install a Bailey bridge, a temporary bridge, with work expected to begin on Oct 14 and finish within a week if conditions allow.

Drivers travelling between Kuala Lumpur and Kota Bharu through Gua Musang are advised to use the alternative route via FT2747, Jalan Pulai-Bandar Baru Gua Musang.

Officials say they will monitor site safety and put temporary measures in place while repairs are pending.

A local assemblyman warned that heavy rain could lead to more sinkholes if the soil beneath the road is not reinforced.
