Raphaël Glucksmann wins social-democratic primary for French presidential election

Raphaël Glucksmann has won the social-democratic primary to choose a candidate for France’s presidential election.

He won in the first round, receiving 66.17% of the votes cast by 120,787 voters.

Boris Vallaud, who leads the Socialist group in France’s National Assembly, supports Glucksmann and called for the left to unite behind him.

The primary campaign included sharp attacks between candidates, so bringing the political family together is an early challenge.

Vallaud said former candidates Ségolène Royal and Olivier Faure had also said they would support Glucksmann.

He described Glucksmann as left-wing and pointed to proposals on inheritance, purchasing power, schools and the green transition.

Glucksmann has pledged to bring people together, and Vallaud said he would appeal to the whole French left and the country.
