Nemours middle school bans football shirts after fights between students

Honoré de Balzac, a public middle school in Nemours, Seine-et-Marne, has banned students from wearing shirts that support sports teams.

The school introduced the rule during the 2026 football World Cup, and it has applied since the start of the school year.

Students had fought and traded insults in the playground over rival teams, including PSG, Marseille, Arsenal and Real Madrid.

One student described clashes after supporters mocked another student whose teams had lost.

Nemours mayor Valérie Lacroutte supports the ban, saying it was needed to calm tensions at the school.

The school is the third middle school in France to ban football shirts.

The local education authority has declined to comment, and no further action is described.
