South Korea opposition calls for two officials to be dismissed over US alliance
South Korea’s People Power Party, the main opposition party, called for Unification Minister Chung Dong-young and National Intelligence Service chief Lee Jong-seok to be dismissed.
The party said the government’s handling of security and foreign policy was damaging the alliance with the United States.
It criticized Chung for saying that a land-mine explosion in the Demilitarized Zone could not yet be attributed to a North Korean attack.
It also criticized the government for recalling South Korea’s ambassador to Ukraine after Ukraine disclosed that North Korean prisoners of war were in its custody.
The party argued that these actions could harm relations with Ukraine and European partners, and benefit Russia and North Korea.
These are the opposition party’s accusations; the supplied accounts do not include a response from the government or the two officials.
The party also urged stronger measures against North Korea, including sanctions over cyber activity and installing loudspeakers near the border.
The accounts do not say whether the government will dismiss the officials or adopt those proposals.
