Amazonas wildfires surge as governments send more firefighting support

Wildfires are affecting several parts of Amazonas, a state in northern Brazil.

In the first 10 days of October, fire hotspots there rose about 271%, according to Censipam, a government agency that monitors the Amazon region.

Emergency conditions have been recognized in 36 municipalities.

Amazonas Governor Roberto Cidade met federal ministers in Manaus to coordinate efforts to fight the fires.

About 300 federal firefighters are due to arrive, joining 290 already working in the state.

The federal government has sent six aircraft to the region, and five more are expected.

São Paulo Governor Tarcísio de Freitas and federal deputy Nikolas Ferreira criticized the government’s handling of the fires, while the authorities continue their response.
