Rupp Bräu files for insolvency, but brewery continues operating

Rupp Bräu, a family-owned brewery in Lauenau, Lower Saxony, has filed for insolvency.

Founded in 1861, it has operated for more than 160 years.

Managing director Kerstin Rupp described the filing as a step to restructure the business and said it had not been unable to pay its bills.

Brewing is continuing as usual, and the company will remain in family hands.

Staff wages have been financed in advance since August.

The insolvency process is expected to open in early November at the Bückeburg district court.

The company’s Felsenkeller restaurant is due to come under new management on November 1.

The filing comes amid other insolvencies in Germany’s brewing sector, including Wolters brewery in Braunschweig, which filed in June and announced plans to close its production site.
