Mario Calabresi seeks centre-left nomination for Milan mayor
Mario Calabresi, a 56-year-old journalist and writer, says he wants to run for mayor of Milan with the centre-left coalition.
He is ready to take part in a primary, but is waiting for the coalition to set out its process and timing.
Other people are also seeking the nomination, including Pierfrancesco Majorino, Anna Scavuzzo and Emmanuel Conte.
Calabresi recently left Chora, the media company he founded, and says he has spent the past month listening to community groups, businesses and political circles in Milan.
He says the city needs to address the gap between people who are prospering and those who are struggling.
He argues that a crowded primary should be a debate about ideas, not a fight that divides the coalition.
While he waits for the coalition’s decision, he plans to continue meeting people across the city.
Mario Calabresi says he is ready to take part in the centre-left primaries to choose a candidate for mayor of Milan.
He says the coalition still needs to clarify the process and timetable.
Calabresi argues that the primaries should involve Milan residents and give the eventual candidate broad popular legitimacy.
He says Milan needs more listening and care, and action to bridge divides between residents.
He warns that turning the primaries into an internal reckoning would be a defeat for Milan and the centre-left.

Calabresi said he was available to run for mayor with the centre-left and left Chora, the media company he founded.
He spent time listening and speaking with cooperatives, associations, volunteers, businesses and party groups.
Corriere della Sera published his interview in which he said he was ready for the primaries.
