Fuyao founder urges Chinese firms expanding overseas to respect local rules

Fuyao founder Cao Dewang urged Chinese investors abroad to respect local laws, regulations and culture when expanding overseas.

Cao spoke on Monday at the University of Hong Kong, drawing on decades of experience building a global manufacturing business.

He warned firms against simply transplanting Chinese business practices overseas.

In the United States, Fuyao employs 6,000 to 7,000 people, with fewer than 200 sent from China, Cao said.

Founded by Cao in 1987, Fuyao is the world’s largest automotive glass manufacturer, and its glass-making business featured in the Oscar-winning documentary *American Factory*.

Cao said adapting to local conditions had been central to Fuyao’s success in the United States amid shifting US-China relations.
