Indonesia's poultry farmers face pressure as producer prices fall
Indonesia's Agriculture Minister Andi Amran Sulaiman says about 4.8 million poultry farmers are struggling as prices for chicken and eggs at the producer level have fallen.
He says producers receive about Rp20,000 to Rp21,000, while consumers may pay Rp40,000 to Rp45,000.
Farmers have protested because their selling prices are below government reference prices.
Amran suspects intermediaries may be affecting prices between farms and consumers, and says the government is investigating.
The government has contacted the national police chief to coordinate on the suspected price manipulation.
It is also addressing farmers' concerns about corn supplies for animal feed, with Amran saying corn allocations will be distributed under an earlier agreement.
He says government programs to buy farmers' products have not yet resolved the price problem, and that building a feed industry will take time.
