Latido Film Sales takes on José María Cabral’s ‘Sh*t Happens’
Dominican filmmaker José María Cabral’s first dark comedy, ‘Sh*t Happens,’ is set to premiere in competition at Tallinn’s Black Nights Film Festival.
Madrid-based Latido Film Sales has taken on the film ahead of that premiere.
The story follows a wealthy family in the Dominican Republic whose daughter is sick.
Her father, a biotechnologist, finds a cure inside Lidia, the family’s nanny.
When Lidia and another household worker realize the value of what they provide, they challenge the family’s social hierarchy.
The film uses absurd humor to examine class, dependence and power in households where domestic workers are essential but treated as socially subordinate.

This story does not have two clearly opposing sides.
This film is brilliant, the premise is original, provocative, and performances are great; it is not only entertaining, but also has a deep clever analysis of class and racism that makes you think after you’ve seen it.
You laugh first, and maybe a second later you ask yourself why you were laughing.
It’s supposed to make you uncomfortable and hopefully be provocative.
