Peter Falk starred in the final film made from a Rod Serling script

Peter Falk, best known for playing the detective in Columbo, starred in the 2000 film A Storm in Summer.

The Showtime remake used a screenplay by Rod Serling, creator of The Twilight Zone, who had died before it was made.

Serling had written the screenplay for a 1970 film with the same title.

The remake was directed by Robert Wise, whose films include West Side Story and The Sound of Music.

Falk plays Mr. Shaddick, an older Jewish shop owner who becomes responsible for Herman Washington, a young Black boy trying to leave the turmoil of Harlem through a sponsorship program.

Though Mr. Shaddick initially wants Herman to leave, he takes him in to spite a wealthy woman who wants to bring the boy to her home.

The film is described as a relatively little-remembered, grounded story compared with the science fiction for which Serling is best known.

It was the last film made from Serling’s work, and it is available online and on DVD.
