Study finds runners went farther and enjoyed runs more in woodland

Researchers studied 47 healthy adults who completed two 30-minute sessions at a moderate effort: one in an industrial urban area and one on a forest circuit.

Participants ran or walked an average of 4,118 metres in the forest, compared with 3,936 metres in the city.

Their average heart rate was the same in both sessions.

They reported greater enjoyment after the forest session, and more said they would be willing to repeat it soon.

The study suggests that green routes may make exercise feel more enjoyable and encourage people to go farther.

It involved a small group and compared just two sessions, so it does not establish how everyone will respond.

The study’s findings suggest that parks, woods and waterfront paths could be options for people looking to make runs more appealing.
