Steven Quay no longer expected to lead US infectious disease institute

Steven Quay is no longer the leading choice to direct the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in the United States.

The institute is part of the National Institutes of Health and was previously led by Anthony Fauci.

Quay is a biopharmaceutical executive with no background in infectious diseases.

He was an early advocate of the theory that the Covid-19 virus was engineered in and leaked from a laboratory in China.

Quay is now expected to take more of a consulting role for the center.

The White House, the Department of Health and Human Services and Quay did not respond to requests for comment.

The sources do not say who may be chosen to lead the institute instead.
