Nigerian governors plan national fund for nutrition programmes
The Nigeria Governors’ Forum says it will establish a National Nutrition Intervention Fund to support the Nutrition 774 Initiative across the country’s 774 local government areas.
The forum represents the governors of Nigeria’s 36 states.
The proposed fund is intended to encourage states to invest more in nutrition, carry out programmes effectively and track results.
The governors made the commitment after a three-day exchange in Ethiopia, where a Nigerian delegation studied that country’s nutrition programmes.
Nigeria’s three levels of government had already signed a Nutrition Compact in February 2025 to coordinate efforts against malnutrition.
Separately, federal agencies plan to begin targeted nutrition work in two states, chosen based on their levels of child stunting.
The governments involved are expected to agree on funding, responsibilities and measures to track progress.
