Magnitude 5.7 earthquake off Sukabumi poses no tsunami threat

A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck the sea south of Sukabumi, in West Java, Indonesia, at about 10:30 a.m.

local time on Sunday, October 11.

It occurred 209 kilometres southwest of Sukabumi district, at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Indonesia’s meteorology and geophysics agency said the earthquake was too small to trigger a tsunami.

It was a shallow earthquake linked to the Indo-Australian plate moving beneath another plate.

The shaking was felt in Surade, Cibitung and Tegalbuleud, with light effects indoors.

By 10:50 a.m., the agency had detected no aftershocks.

It said it would continue monitoring and urged people to stay calm and avoid buildings damaged by the quake.
