Brazil’s National Institute of Meteorology issued storm alerts for areas across 12 states on Monday, October 12.

The alerts began on Sunday and remain in effect until 11:59 p.m.

Monday.

Orange alerts, the more serious level, cover parts of seven states, including São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.

Yellow alerts cover areas in those states and others, including Mato Grosso, Rondônia, Amazonas and Acre.

In orange-alert areas, rain could reach 60 millimeters per hour, winds could reach 100 kilometers per hour, and hail is possible.

Yellow-alert areas could get up to 30 millimeters of rain per hour, winds of up to 60 kilometers per hour and hail.

The warnings matter because storms could cause power cuts, damage crops, bring down trees and cause flooding; the alerts end late Monday.
