South Korean court hears bail request from former National Assembly security chief

A South Korean appeals court is hearing a bail request from Mok Hyun-tae, a former chief of security at the National Assembly in Seoul.

He was sentenced to three years in prison in February for his role in blocking access to the Assembly during the December 3 martial law declaration.

The first court found that he directed security staff to bar everyone, including lawmakers, from entering.

It said this obstructed lawmakers from carrying out their duties.

Mok was jailed in court after sentencing and later dismissed from his post.

The appeals court is also holding a bail hearing for former military officer Kim Hyun-tae, who was sentenced to 12 years for taking troops into the Assembly and helping seal off its chamber.

The court will decide whether either man can be released on bail while their appeals proceed.
