Samcheok to raise veterans’ allowances from 300,000 to 400,000 won

Samcheok, a city in South Korea’s Gangwon Province, will raise monthly allowances for veterans and people who served in wars from 300,000 to 400,000 won starting January 1.

The increase also applies to eligible family members of people who served.

Until now, these allowances counted as income when officials assessed eligibility for basic livelihood support.

That could cause some low-income recipients to lose benefits or receive smaller payments.

The city has changed its rules to allow the allowances to be excluded from income calculations during welfare reviews.

The change is intended to prevent recipients from being worse off because they receive a veterans’ allowance.

The city says the higher payments are meant to support veterans and their families with living costs.
