DOC NYC highlights films on Frida Kahlo and Indigenous artist Sara Flores
DOC NYC has announced 13 films it is highlighting for its 17th edition, which runs from November 11 to 29 at venues across New York City.
One film, directed by Trisha Ziff, examines how Frida Kahlo’s image became a global brand after her death.
It considers how that commercial image can become separated from Kahlo’s politics and her work.
Another documentary follows Shipibo-Konibo artist Sara Flores, a painter from the Peruvian Amazon.
Flores uses natural dyes to make geometric patterns rooted in Kené, a Shipibo-Konibo artistic practice, and her work has gained international recognition.
The film connects her art with resistance to environmental, political and social problems.
The festival’s listed screenings include dates in November, with some films also available to watch online.
DOC NYC’s 17th edition runs from November 11 through November 29, 2026, at venues throughout New York City.

Frida: The Girl Just Doesn't Go Away, directed by Trisha Ziff, examines the commercial fascination with Kahlo and how her image has taken on a life apart from her motivations and work.
The Hummingbird Paints Fragrant Songs documents Flores, a Shipibo-Konibo artist who paints geometric patterns using natural dyes from the Peruvian Amazon.
Hyperallergic included both films in its preview of 13 festival selections.
