A life-size replica of a Chinese mural prompts US-China collaboration

A life-size replica of a Chinese Buddhist mural has prompted a rare collaboration between the United States and China.

The original mural is displayed at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.

It came from Guangsheng Temple in Shanxi province, central China, and dates to the Yuan dynasty in the 14th century.

More than 15 metres wide and 7.5 metres tall, it shows a large gathering of Buddhist figures centred on the Medicine Buddha.

Zhang Jian, who directs the Meticulous Painting Institute at the Chinese National Academy of Arts, was deeply impressed by the mural during visits to the museum before 2023.

The collaboration connects the museum’s display of Chinese art with work by a Chinese arts institution.

The available information does not say what the collaboration will produce or what happens next.
