Romero’s Season of the Witch is a feminist drama about a trapped housewife

George A. Romero, best known for his zombie films, made Season of the Witch in 1973.

The film was first released as Hungry Wives and marketed as softcore pornography, but it found little audience.

It follows Joan Mitchell, a housewife trapped in an abusive marriage who turns from therapy to witchcraft while seeking a different life.

The occult is a small part of a story focused on her dissatisfaction with her role at home.

Romero’s original 130-minute cut is lost, but recovered material expanded the 89-minute release to 104 minutes.

The film’s low budget and uneven acting sit alongside an atmospheric style and a progressive portrayal of feminism for its time.

Season of the Witch is available to stream on Mubi and Kanopy.
