Busan film festival draws more than 50,000 program visitors in five days

The 31st Busan International Film Festival is being held in Busan, South Korea.

In its first five days, more than 50,000 people attended official events such as talks and actor sessions, exceeding the total for those events at last year’s festival.

This is the first edition since the festival gained A-list status from the International Federation of Film Producers Associations.

The program has brought international filmmakers and actors together with Korean audiences, while 13 films compete for the Busan Award.

The winning film will become eligible for the Academy Award for Best International Feature Film.

An industry market alongside the festival has brought together more than 3,000 professionals from 1,200 companies across 58 countries.

A historical thriller’s withdrawal from red-carpet events over disputes about its depiction of history has also prompted debate about artistic freedom.

The festival runs through Thursday, when the Busan Award winners are due to be announced.
