IMSS workers to vote on 6.8% pay increase on October 14
Workers at Mexico’s Social Security Institute, known as the IMSS, will vote on October 14 on a pay increase approved by their union congress.
The proposed increase is 6.8%, made up of 2.9% in base pay and 3.9% in benefits.
Some workers have rejected it and say they want an increase of at least 10%.
Protests in Mexico City and other areas have included a blockade on Paseo de la Reforma.
Workers have also called for the return of an earlier pension system and for more medical supplies.
IMSS director Zoé Robledo said the pension issue requires a change in law and is not for the institute to decide.
He said hospitals are continuing to provide care, while acknowledging pressure from rising demand and shortages.
The union-convened vote will show whether workers accept the pay proposal; a national march could follow if their demands are not met.
