Lockdowns cut global fire activity but raised it in some regions

Researchers counted fires detected by satellite and compared them with weather and lockdown data.

They estimated that fire activity fell by 12% worldwide, but it rose in some regions.

Lockdowns may have meant fewer fires were started, but also fewer people were available to spot and put them out.

This matters because people can both cause fires and help prevent them.
